In line with the motto of the stand, "Everything under one roof - Solutions for roofs and facades" („Alles unter einem Dach - Lösungen für Dach und Fassade"), large-scale models illustrate the wide variety of design possibilities for the building shell. The products used come from the companies Dachziegelwerke Nelskamp GmbH, Hilti Deutschland AG, Pieper Holzbau GmbH & Co. KG, Rathscheck Schiefer und Dach-Systeme ZN of Wilh. Werhahn KG Neuss, RHEINZINK GmbH & Co. KG, SAINT-GOBAIN ISOVER G+H AG and VELUX Deutschland GmbH. The industry was supported by the agricultural enterprise Wald und Holz NRW; it provided the wood for the models which were made using the timber frame construction method.

The Innovation Prize Architecture + Building awarded every year is aimed at industrial companies and manufacturing enterprises in the construction sector as well as at architects, interior decorators and designers who work in this sector. It rewards products and conceptual solutions according to architectural criteria where the design and technical aspects are impressive.

"Give high heating costs the cold shoulder" – that's the maxim of the "NRW Heat Pump Market Place". Heat pumps save heating costs and protect the environment by using environmental heat to a great extent. In 2010, roughly 51,000 new heat pumps were installed in Germany, a third more than in the previous year. Of the 400,000 heat pumps now installed throughout Germany, roughly 80,000 in NRW are ensuring environmentally friendly heat generation.

The photovoltaics branch has been experiencing a real boom in recent years. In Germany alone, the world's largest photovoltaics market, the output of the currently more than 860,000 systems installed is over 17,200 megawatts (MWp). Ever more consumers are taking an interest in a solar power system on their own roof. The campaign "Photovoltaics NRW – Solar Power for North Rhine-Westphalia" provides information on the possibilities of this eco-friendly power generation from solar energy. Suppliers of photovoltaic systems in NRW will be presenting their products and providing concrete information on individual solutions.

Heating with wood is becoming ever more attractive as an environmentally friendly and economical alternative. Wood pellet heating systems have been enjoying a real boom for some years, both throughout Germany and in North Rhine-Westphalia. In the meantime, over 140,000 pellet heating systems have been installed throughout Germany, of which 20,000 in NRW. The "Wood Pellets NRW" campaign is supporting this development with marketing activities throughout NRW.

Nowadays, in addition to their pure function and appealing aesthetics, structures must also satisfy the requirements of sustainable building. Low requirement for raw materials, energy-saving manufacture of the building products, environmentally and socially compatible in their construction and operation as well as long, low-maintenance life cycles of hot-dip galvanised and coated structures are the crucial factors, already in the planning stage.

High-strength steel sections and construction elements made of steel sheet satisfy these demands in a special way and permit extremely economical structures. Moreover, at the end of their useful life, they can be easily demolished and recycled 100% without any loss of quality. That makes them renewable building materials with a positive ecological life cycle assessment. With its high load-bearing capacity in relation to its own weight and clear structures which concentrate on the function of load distribution, the building material steel is increasingly being used in modern architecture, opening up visions for the architecture of the future.

As the Congress in Essen internationally renowned architects and engineers are presenting current projects and innovative architectural solutions for building structures with wide-span, filigree, load-bearing structures made of steel. Peter Ackermann from Munich, Paul Andreu from Paris, Mels Crouwel from Amsterdam, Hemma Fasch and Jakob Fuchs from Vienna, Dietmar Feichtinger from Paris, Florian Kohlbecker from Gaggenau and Chris Wilkinson from London will be there. At the Wood Construction Congress, well-known speakers will be presenting exemplary wood construction projects, concepts and viable solutions which are intended to give the participants inspiration and assistance for their practical building work. The free event is being held on 12 January 2012, probably from 9.30 to 13.00, in the Congress Center Ost in conjunction with the Chamber of Construction Engineers - NRW (Ingenieurkammer Bau NRW), the Association of German Master Builders, Architects and Engineers NRW State Association (Bund Deutscher Baumeister, Architekten und Ingenieure – Landesverband NRW) as well as the patron and cooperation partner, the Wood Information Association (Informationsverein Holz). The organisers are again expecting well over 500 participants – builders and experts, architects, construction engineers and students.

The focus of this all-day event will be on informative talks between over 120 exhibitors and trade journal editors from all over Germany as well as neighbouring countries. The Meeting with the Press therefore offers an efficient opportunity to already share editorial information in the run-up to the DEUBAU 2012 trade fair. Interesting innovations can therefore already be discussed in advance and prepared in good time for the trade fair issue of individual trade media. As a result, the DEUBAU Meeting with the Press will be offering both exhibitors and trade journal editors an ideal platform to prepare for the “leading construction fair of 2012".

The Meeting with the Press on 27 October 2011 starts off with a morning press conference – followed by the informative discussions. In the evening before the event the "DEUBAU Prize 2012" for young architects will be awarded at a ceremony to which the exhibitors and the trade press are also invited. In addition to various exhibits, the focus of the association's presentation will be the live workshop "Room Potential". Students of architecture at Bochum University have developed rooms which deal with major design features (spatial effects, proportion, the science of colours, light and shade) and presentation techniques. One of these designs will be implemented by trainee stucco plasterers at the stand as part of the live workshop. It is intended to provide a close-up insight into the diverse and challenging profession of the stucco plasterer. In addition, the fair stand of the building trade associations will host the equally traditional New Year's reception, to which the associations have invited representatives from politics, industry and associations as well as the heads and managing directors of their member craft guilds.

The FöRa 2012 - "Trade Fair for Public Space Design" - is an important communication platform for planners and decision-makers who deal with the design and maintenance of public spaces, leisure facilities, playgrounds, outdoor and green spaces, and traffic areas. The range of the international fair comprises six product sectors: green spaces, road surfaces, playground equipment, street furniture, lighting and advice.

Municipal decision-makers, landscape architects, landscape gardeners, architects, urban and regional planners, and representatives from city marketing organisations, economic development associations, trade associations, publishing houses and housing construction organisations will be given the opportunity at the FöRa 2012 to get to know the latest products, developments and solutions for modern and livable urban development and a safe living environment.

The fair is supplemented by topical papers on subjects of public space. Thanks to the link with the DEUBAU, which recorded 67,000 visitors last year, alone 3,000 decision-makers from the local authority sector, the organiser is hoping for an above-average number of high-quality visitors.

As the fair venue, Essen is intended to also give the decision-makers addressed from the densely populated surroundings the opportunity to look after and extend their own networks. For the DEUBAU in turn, the most important construction trade fair in Germany in 2012, the FöRa represents an ideal supplement and expansion of the range on offer.

The Innovation Award Housing industry 2012 will be celebrating its premiere as part of this commitment with its own exhibition area reserved especially for the housing industry as well as numerous events in the supporting programme.

After a long and intensive discussion the jury decided in the non-public meeting held on 8 April 2011 to award the DEUBAU Prize 2012 to two nominees.

The DEUBAU Prize 2012 is shared by Johannes Kappler, Nuremberg, with the project "Palladium flat, high-rise apartment block in Groningen (NL)" and the architects Saetti, Bochmann and Schwirtz from "Studioinges Architektur und Städtebau", Berlin, with the project "Experimenta Science Center, Heilbronn".

Companies and partners from the forestry and timber sectors will be presenting themselves for the third time on a more than 300 m² joint stand in hall 12 at the fair complex.

The competition for the German Developers Prize addresses the area of conflict between high quality and affordable costs and highlights the special role of the developer. The Prize is awarded in two categories: firstly, for renovation, modernisation and conversion projects, secondly for innovative projects in housing construction. In addition, special prizes may also be awarded for "Preservation Orders in Housing Construction" and "Space Design in Housing Construction".

The organisers of the competition since 1986 have been the Federal Association of German Housing and Real Estate Companies (GdW Bundesverband deutscher Wohnungs-und Immobilienunternehmen), the Federation of German Architects (Bund Deutscher Architekten BDA) and the German Association of Cities (Deutsche Städtetag (DST)), represented by the working group KOOPERATION GdW-BDA-DST. Since its foundation in 1981, the object of the KOOPERATION working group has been to strengthen the cooperation based on partnership between local authorities, housing companies, freelance architects and other planners at local and national level in order to make a contribution in a wide variety of ways towards solving the current problems in housing construction and urban development. 19 competitions were organised up to 2010 and almost 3,350 new build and modernisation projects with more than 235,000 apartments were submitted and judged. Therefore, the competition has, without a doubt, become the most successful of its kind in Germany.

Particularly pleasing: the good reputation of this cooperation is attracting many first-time exhibitors to Essen in 2012 and, in addition, the long-standing exhibitors have expanded their exhibition areas. This has meant that the previous space in hall 9 is no longer sufficient. The IT sector is moving from its established hall 9 into the larger hall 1, directly at the south entrance to the fairgrounds.

However, the joint stand organised by the BVBS at a key location in the hall is already virtually booked out. And the BVBS Evening, organised for the first time at the DEUBAU 2010, the get-together of this branch, will once again be held at the DEUBAU 2012 in view of the great positive feedback.

Hall 3 will be available again owing to the strong demand for exhibition space. In this, the largest hall of Messe Essen, the focus will be on interior finishing, facades and building chemistry in addition to other product sectors.

Meeting place for the housing industry at the DEUBAU 2012 – present your company direct to your target group! The “Meeting Place for the Housing Industry” at the DEUBAU 2012 is a distinctly separate section on the issues of “Housing industry” and “Housing management”, accompanied by an exhibition on “Innovative products for the housing industry”. Here, you can present specific products and systems direct to important decision-makers.

The third day of the Congress is being organised by the International Geothermal Center in Bochum. Market leaders and institutions from the Ruhr metropolis as well as institutions from all over Germany will be presenting this still young sector of industry with the latest topics and projects in order to further increase the degree of awareness of planners, architects and engineers.

The third day of the Congress will be concentrating in particular on the field of near-surface geothermal energy which is used in Germany to recover heat in combination with heat pumps and for cooling purposes. One key location advantage: numerous important players and sponsors of the branch have their headquarters in the Ruhr metropolis, for example, the International Geothermal Center in Bochum and the Netzwerk Geothermie.NRW of EnergieAgentur NRW (NRW geothermal energy network of the NRW Energy Agency).
